Skipping some rules

Don't be surprised if you see a rule or two missing, I've decided that some are holding me back from writing so I'm just going to skip them.  That's all.

Rule No. 140 - It pays to be obvious, especially if you have a reputation for subtlety.

I am from a family that are anything but subtle. When it comes to each other, we call a spade a spade. Which can cause very heated debates but it does help get to the point and if you lucky, you can sort out a situation chop chop by just saying it like it is. I found this description on Google from an unknown fella and it makes a lot of sense. "I wouldn't say that that being obvious is "good," but instead that being obvious is to your advantage / being obvious can yield helpful or profitable consequences for you." If you walk into your bosses office and beat around the bush trying to hint that you would kind of like it if you could maybe, you know, get a raise, as apposed to going in and stating you think you have earned a raise rather, which one do you think you going to get a better response to? In the same breath though, being obvious can have its downfalls. As everything in life though, there needs to be a balance. I think, what this rule i...

No legacy is so rich as honesty. William Shakespeare

I realise that this post is going to sound like a generalization and a few people may be upset by this, but I need to get this off my chest. What is it with you guys (obviously not all of you, but at the moment it seems as though it is most). Why do you think that it is okay to make us think you like us, really like us but then date someone else and "forget" to mention it. What makes it okay to say you'd like to go to the "friend zone" cause you not ready for a relationship, this after quite a few dates and then tell us about all the other dates you going on? Why you dating if you not ready? And why do you think it's okay to tell us about it. What makes you think you can still be on a dating site, and active just TWO weeks after your wedding! What makes it okay to tell us how much you love us, need us, want us, but then tell us it's not the right time? Keep us close enough to be there for you but far enough to not have to make any promises. Even k...

Rule No.139 - Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened. - Dr Seuss

Let's be honest here. As brilliant as this rule is, it's one of the hardest things to do. You ask any bride the day after her wedding, is she happy it's over? No! That big day you've been waiting for for years and months of planning is gone. Ask someone that's just had a break up, all heartbroken. No! Not smiling, well most of the time. How about a holiday. Ever known any normal person to smile after it's over? Nope, not me anyway, I cry after almost every holiday. I even get sad at the end of a fun night or a great movie. Endings suck. Yes, you smile when you think about past holidays, or your big day, or amazing times in that relationship that you had, or the fun dancing all night, but that's only later, after processing. Don't get me wrong here, we should definitely smile about the incredible things and people that have happened, but i think you need that small grieving time to process the ending of something. That's probably defeating the w...

Rule No 138 - What's the old saying? "Don't look back; somebody might be catching up." Well, don't even slow down, much less look back.

Okay, I have a good example for this rule. I started running (I use this term very loosely, it was more of a shuffled walk) just under a year ago in Spain. I had a 5km walk to and from work most days and on my off days I started feeling as though I needed to get out and as we know from a previous post, bikes are not my thing, so the next best thing was a brisk walk around the golf course. The furtherest I managed was, I think, about 5,4km at a gentle jog.  One day a friend of mine, who was doing 10km in her sleep at the time, asked if I was keen to do a 10km "fun run" in Gibraltar with her. Feeling up for the challenge and fitter than I'd felt in years, I agreed. I mean, why not. I was thinking of the Gun Run my sister and I did the year before and even though that was a 5km the vibe was awesome, with hundreds of people of all shapes and sizes. On the morning of the race we met up and headed towards the start, where there were about seven other people. Strange, I th...

Rule No. 137 - it is fatal to look hungry. It makes people want to kick you...

Wowzers, that's a little harsh. At first glance I was like, how's this guy? Shew. But then I calmed down and realized I was reading it literally. No one could really ever be that mean. Right?   The man responsible for this quote is George Orwell, one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century. Orwell wrote literary criticism, poetry, fiction and polemical (a controversial argument) journalism. This was one intelligent fella so I think we should pay attention to this rule. After a bit of googling, turns out he is using this quote with regards to job hunting. If you have that "hungry" face, you not going to get anything, except a kick in the teeth. It's the weirdest thing, you need it the most but it's the one thing that can be your downfall. When you really desperately want something, you have to pretend that it's not a big deal. We've all heard of those desperate eyes, and some of us know them a little too well. It's uncomfort...

Rule No.136 - Love with your mouth shut, help without breaking your ass or publicizing it, keep cool but care.

So I knew this girl, and for a very long time, she had to love with her mouth shut, but not in the way this rule is saying, I don’t think. She had to love with her mouth shut because she had to love from afar. She wasn’t allowed to openly love him because he was never hers to love. That’s what I thought of immediately when I read this rule. But thinking about it more carefully, maybe what it’s trying to say is that you don’t need to blurt out to the world your undying love for someone. I think it’s more about showing your love. Like making a beautiful meal or planning a picnic, or doing something fun like go carting, surfing or fishing. With social media today its easy to love out loud, but what you feel for that other person actually has nothing to do with us. It’s between you two and its incredibly special. You are so lucky that you have someone that you can love and loves you back. Remember, actions speak louder than words, so show your love instead. Helping ...
