“Wanting to meet an author because you like his work is like wanting to meet a duck because you like paté."
I am not entirely sure how this relates to life and rules to live by but it really does suck when you have read a book and enjoyed it and then you find out that the author is a real muppet, it kind of ruins everything, the sincerity of the book as well as the feeling you got as you were reading it. I get the same about music. If I see a music video that is really quite horrible, it ruins the song for me. I am a very visual person though, that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.
Maybe what the writer is saying is that you should take something for its face value? When you start digging deeper you may find something you don't particularly like and then it ruins everything that you once enjoyed that specific thing for.
